Natural Bluestone Terrace

Crafting a Foundation for Outdoor Living

In this featured project, we replaced a standard outdoor space with a premium natural bluestone terrace, designed to blend the rugged beauty of the Northeast with the clean lines of modern suburban architecture.

The Ashlar Pattern: Complexity in Order

Rather than using uniform tiles, we utilized a multi-sized Ashlar pattern. This layout requires advanced planning and precise cutting to ensure that no four corners ever meet in a single point—a hallmark of professional masonry. The result is a “random-but-ordered” look that feels timeless and artisanal. We selected stones with a rich variance in color, ranging from deep slate blues to warm earth-toned ochres, which makes the patio look stunning even when wet.

Seamless Grade Integration

One of the key challenges of this site was the elevation change. We addressed this by installing a hand-stacked fieldstone retaining wall. By following the natural curve of the landscape, the wall serves two functions:

  • Structural Support: It securely holds the upper garden bed and mature conifers in place.
  • Aesthetic Transition: The rough, textured surface of the fieldstone provides a perfect rustic contrast to the smooth, thermal-finished surface of the bluestone patio.
Drainage and Durability

Behind the scenes of every great hardscape is a focus on water management. For this terrace, we utilized a multi-layer compacted base and specific jointing techniques to ensure that water sheds away from the home’s foundation and the stone remains level through freeze-thaw cycles. This attention to detail ensures that this patio will remain a centerpiece for the property for decades to come.
